Infertility

Infertility is a significant health issue. It is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive after 2 years or more of intercourse without contraception. About 70% of cases are due to female infertility and 30% to male infertility.

Female infertility could be due to:

  • hormonal factor 41%
  • fallopian tube abnormality 32%
  • uterine factor 16%
  • cervical factor 4.7%
  • no apparent cause 5%

Male infertility could be due to deficient sperm count , motility or morphology.

Age factor: 20% of women in the U.S. now have their 1st child after the age of 35. In Chinese medicine the principals of diagnosis is based either on 4 phases of menstrual cycle or on deficiency or excess of different organs. However the success rate is very high both in the cases of treatment with acupuncture and Chinese herbs or in combination with ART (assisted reproductive technology: IUI, ICSI, IVF, GIFT, ZIFT etc.

In 2002, Fertility and Sterility, 77(4): 721-4 published that women receiving acupuncture and IVF had a higher clinical pregnancy rate 42% vs. 26%, comparing to regular IVF procedure.
